Engineering drawings are the industry's means of communicating detailed and accurate information on how to fabricate, assemble, troubleshoot, repair, and operate a piece of equipment or a system. Engineering drawings as we know contains 2D sketches of designs. The ability to read and understand information contained on these drawings is essential to perform most engineering-related jobs.

Our course will not only teach you the rules, definitions and standards of GD & T, but also will help you understand how to apply the knowledge that you will be learning with us. GD & T in itself is a very vast subject and takes a lot of practice to master it. Often the participant grasps all the concepts of GD & T but finds it hard to apply. That’s where our course comes in, the syllabus is smartly aligned with the work flow of GD & T. This course explains all major topics with the help of interactive exercises.

Recommended background

Participants are assumed to be relatively new into GD & T. This course being an introductory course into GD & T starts from the very basics of the subject, like explaining the symbols, definitions, etc.

However, participants are expected to have knowledge of engineering sheet drawings like orthographic and isometric representation of 3D objects.

Your Learning

This course is a complete course on GD & T. The course will focus on developing your skills for generation of engineering drawings. This course will help you create better quality (in terms of neat and tidiness), technically correct, and universally accepted drawing sheets. At the end of the course, you will be able to develop a habit of looking at drawing sheets more keenly and understand all the symbols and values that are written next to it. You will be in a better position to understand a correctly generated industry standard mechanical drawing sheet.

This is a free course on Geometric dimensioning and tolerance. The course lessons are delivered with the help of interactive videos. Large attention is given to develop the content of this course in such a way that the participant would be taught each and every topic of the course with the help of pictures, animations and videos and not just with the help of textual content. All the concepts are explained with the help of simple exercises or examples. In future, we will be extending our course lessons to cover GD & T in CAD software as well.

Course Format

The course is delivered using videos lessons. The length of video varies from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. Each video lesson introduces you to one single topic of GD & T. In all we will be covering five topics which are mentioned in the course syllabus. Considering the number of modules covered in all the video lessons and required practice that you need to do, it is expected to finish this course in 4 weeks.

Course Syllabus

The course is divided into five lessons. Each lesson has a specific objective and is designed to satisfy the needs of subsequent lesson. It is recommended that you do not move to the next lesson until all the concepts in the lesson are well understood.

Lesson 1: Engineering Drawing

This Lesson consists of the following topics

  • Components of drawing sheets
  • Orthographic projection
  • Dimensioning

This lesson takes you through a virtual tour of the engineering subject of Mechanical drawing. It will refresh your prior concepts of engineering drawing like orthographic projection, sheet nomenclatures etc.

The second half of the lesson discusses about the various dimensioning symbols and their use as well as proper way to dimension a drawing in terms of spacing and readability. These concepts are taught with the help of exercises.

Lesson 2: Geometric Tolerance

This lesson gives you a proper idea of all the various aspects of tolerance. This lesson covers the following topics of tolerance

  • Overview and definition
  • Various functions of tolerance
  • Ways of specifying tolerance
  • Types of tolerances
  • Tolerance of form and orientation
  • Consideration of factors while choosing tolerance and its effect on costing

Lesson 3: Limits and Fits

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the concept of Limits and Fits. This concept comes into picture due to the fact that it is very difficult to produce any manufactured object exact to its dimensions mentioned in the drawing sheet.

Following are the topics covered in this lesson

  • Introduction and terminology
  • Understanding the difference between allowance and tolerance
  • Various types of Fits
  • Choosing and displaying system for Limits and Fits

Lesson 4: Surface Finish in GD & T

In this lesson, we will be first revising the theoretical explanation of surface finish and the factors affecting its roughness. You will also be learning the surface finish techniques and its measurement methods.

Later on in this course, we will study the various roughness parameters with their definitions, ways to indicate surface roughness in drawing sheets with examples.

Lesson 5: Welding Symbols in GD & T

Here we will be revising the basic concepts of welding, such as – processes, terminologies and joints. Later we will study the basic set of weld related symbols in GD & T and then focus on how they are represented on an industry level design/drawing sheet.

1. How useful will this course be to a mechanical student?

In every manufacturing industry, the product goes through various stages wherein different engineers work on it at different stages. Hence it is very necessary for every mechanical engineer to know how to read design drawings. We recommend you to take up this course and get the most out of GD & T as soon as possible.

2. When can I start the course and how much time is needed to complete the course?

The course is available all the time. Time necessary to start the course is what you need to create a LearnCAx login :). Considering difficulty level, understanding capacity and necessary practice time, on average, we expect this course to be finished in 4 week.

3. Who should attend this course?

Every mechanical engineer is expected to have knowledge of GD & T. This course is designed especially for first year mechanical engineers as they have engineering drawing as a subject, but any mechanical graduate who feels the need of GD & T at a later stage would also get benefited from this course.

4. How difficult is this course?

The course is designed for beginners and we believe that it’s easy for everyone.

5. I have few queries related to work I am doing. Can I contact you?

As the course is designed for beginners, so you might have specific questions. Feel free to ask those questions using the link “Ask a Question” given on course page.

6. Will I get any study material along with this course?

No. This course only contains video access. However, if demanded by the participant, our dedicated support team would provide you online links where you can continue your quest for knowledge regarding GD&T. We will be very happy to help you.

7. What next learning you suggest once this course is completed?

We suggest you to proceed next with our free course “Introduction to SolidWorks”. Meanwhile, we are developing two more courses in line with your interest i.e., premium course on 3D modeling using SolidWorks and GD & T applied to CAD software. Once it is launched, we strongly recommend you to join those course in order to continue your journey with us.
